The tennis team will host a quad against Snyder, Monahans and Andrews on Sept. 15.
“I think we are going to do excellent,” sophomore Easton Swinnea said. “We are going to play teams that we played last year. We are familiar with their strengths and weaknesses, and as long as we play to their weaknesses, we should win.”
The tennis team won a combined eight matches to Andrews’s and Monahans’s 52 wins in fall play last year.
“Monahans lost some players, but they have good underclassmen,” Coach Rhonda Burns said. “Andrews will still have a good team.”
Burns said Snyder lost several but they are still a strong team.
“[Snyder] has a full team, and we will give away some matches to them,” Burns said. “It will be tough, and we will have a fight.”
The team has positive mind set for the quad.
“We will do well,” junior Aracely Avila said. “Most of the teams coming are ones we played last year, and we are trying to fix our mistakes.”
The tennis team went 9-1 on Sept. 8 against Midland Lee.
“We are playing pretty well,” Burns said. “We won our first match, and we are practicing hard and wanting to improve.”
Avila said the team is getting better.
“I think the season will be difficult,” Avila said, “but we will make it through it.”
The Indians and Maidens will face the same new district as football including Estacado, Cooper, Levelland, Shallowater and Andrews.
“It’s going to be tricky,” Swinnea said, “but we will still do our best which should be pretty good.”
Shallowater presents a strong team, one that took three event titles at the District 2-3A meet in April.
“I think Shallowater is the toughest,” Avila said. “I’ve never beaten a girl from there.”
According to Burns, Levelland also presents challenges in the new district.
The team lost its most experienced player to graduation.
“It’s hard to recover from the loss of the seniors,” Burns said. “We are short on numbers on the boys’ side.”
Avila said that Swinnea was a team leader because “He is always positive no matter what.”
Optimism for the new season keeps Swinnea on track.
“I think we will be pretty good this year,” Swinnea said. “We have a lot of potential players. If they are willing to work, we will get the job done.”
