Consistency and intensity. That is what volleyball Coach Jackie Horton wants from her team tomorrow in Big Spring against the Lady Steers and Water Valley. Consistency was not what Horton got after the Maidens won the first two games against Crane, 26-24, 25-16, but then lost the next two 26-24 and 30-28 on Sept. 11. The match came down to a fifth game which the Maidens squeaked out of 15-13 to win.
“At times we play amazing,” Horton said. “Sometimes we give up and don’t try.”
The win over Crane brought the Maidens’ overall record to 14-11.
“We start really well during games,” freshman Kendall Freeman said. “We need to be more consistent and finish games.”
Many of the Maidens agreed that they didn’t play as well as they should have against Crane.
“It was a terrible performance,” junior Hope Hicks said. “We didn’t play how we usually play.”
With district just around the corner and a new group of teams except Andrews, the Maidens will be playing more unfamiliar opponents. The Maidens have some experience with Estacado, beating the Lady Matadors in three games last year and also taking out Cooper in five games last season.
“It’s going to be a lot tougher,” Hicks said. “We have the ability to win though.”
Horton knows her team will have to be focused in order to win district.
“It’s going to be a battle,” Horton said. “Every night we step onto the court we need to be ready to play.”
The Maidens will start district play against Shallowater Sept. 22.
