The powerlifting team will host its own meet tomorrow in the Primary main gym.
The Maidens and Indians saw their last action in Lamesa on Jan. 21.
Both teams placed fifth overall with freshman Andrew Alvidrez and sophomore Kinsey Tharp taking first in their weight classes.
“I was really excited when I heard I won,” Tharp said. “I hope I’ll perform like I did a lot more this year.”
Alvidrez is ranked number one in Region One in his weight class according to Texas High School Powerlifting Association, which is a rank he intends to hold on to.
“I didn’t expect it, but it is my plan to win regionals,” Alvidrez said. “I’ve already lifted the required 1,000 pounds to qualify for regionals.”
Sophomore Ramon Juarez was one of the few returning lifters from last year who competed in the Lamesa meet.
“The hardest part is getting back on a diet to stay in my weight class,” Juarez said. “I also have to improve on my bench press.”
The squat event is the hardest for Juarez.
“It’s the first lift of the day,” Juarez said. “It’s crazy at the beginning of the day, and it hurts.”
