OUR VIEW: Challenge fears, step out of comfort zone
Anxious breathing, clammy hands, restless legs and a shaky voice can happen to anyone doing something new for the first time, but that doesn’t mean that person should not try new things. We should learn to step outside our protected comfort zones and reap the rewards of what is out there.
While leaving the comfort zone can be scary, the outcome usually outweighs the risk.
For instance, joining a club can lead to new friends and have amazing experiences. Trying out for a team could result in rewards like a school record or a scholarship. Auditioning for a part in a play could be fun and make speaking in public less of a fear.
Stepping out of a comfort zone doesn’t have to be a big thing. It could be as simple as trying a new food, restaurant or drink. Trying even small things can expand intellect and experience. Wearing clothes that don’t typically fit in can inspire others, which is the way fashion is made.
Staying in a comfort zone can cause more harm than good. Those who rarely challenge the boundaries of their comfort zones will forever remain caged by fear. Without testing the limits, life can be boring. Make the effort to do something different. If the new experience isn’t enjoyable, that is okay. At least you tried and know.
Those trapped in their comfort zones argue that it is called a comfort zone for a reason. No one is asking a person to cut off all ties to the comfort zone. Just attempting one new thing is a step out of a comfort zone. Instead of staying enclosed in fear, take the chance to do something you have never done before.
They say insanity is repeating an action over and over again and expecting different results. Staying in a comfort zone even though you want to change by that definition is insanity. If something different is going to happen, a person must to take the first step.
With the start of the new year, it is a perfect time to try something new. Don’t let the fear of the unfamiliar control you life.
