The UIL academic team took the overall region championship on Saturday with 186 points after three days of competition at Texas Tech University.
Thirty-two students qualified for state competition. All state qualifiers will compete in Austin on May 19-20.
On Wednesday, the one-act play The Unreturning scored 40 points and advanced to state. Senior Javen Gutierrez was named to the region all-star cast. Senior Owen Adam and junior Nehemiah McCoy were honorable mention all-star cast.
Cast and crew includes Adam, Gutierrez, McCoy, senior Leah Martin, junior Kobe Cabello, junior Violet Barkis Robertson, junior Kamryn Leblanc, senior Matthew Peters, junior Reese Dickson, freshman Debbie Giesbrecht, junior Joey Penner, sophomore Amber Rosales, junior Hannah Ortega, senior Francisco Olvera, sophomore Carissa Werdenberg, junior Diana Reimer, junior Katelynn Alonzo, sophomore Cooper Sales, junior Paityn Espinoza, sophomore Elijah Lapusan, freshman Scarlett Ellison, freshman Jazmin Conejo and sophomore Anaiah Beydoun.
The remaining academic contests competed on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, the number sense team took first overall with a score of 389, advancing all four members to state with 29 points. Team members include junior Eva Thiessen in first, senior Jack Chen in fourth, senior Brett Boyles and sophomore Sophie Guenther.
The calculator team took second overall with score of 603, scoring 17 points. Chen took second individually and will advance to state.
On Saturday, the mathematics team was second place team scoring 33 points with a team score of 458, which was the highest second place score in the state in 4A and qualifies all four members as the wildcard team to state. Members include Chen in second individually, Thiessen in third, senior Olivia Hicks in fifth and senior Kytzia Hermosillo Mendoza as the last qualifying member.
In prose interpretation, Adam took third, scoring 10 points and qualifying for state.
In science, senior Geydis Cuesta Rodriguez took second highest in biology.
In journalism, the team took the region championship, scoring 47 points over four events.
In copyediting, Beydoun took fourth and is alternate to state.
In feature writing junior Melissa Gutierrez Tarango took fourth and is alternate to state.
In editorial writing, sophomore Mattie Hice took sixth.
In headlines, junior Mia Cowan took the region championship and Hice was second. Both qualified for state.
