UIL academic team sits in second place with five events remaining

The UIL academic team sits in second place with 261 points behind Andrews’s 489.66 points after March 21 competition with five speech events remaining in district competition. Greenwood is third with 222 points, Pecos is fourth with 121.33 points, Monahans is fifth with 118 points, and Fort Stockton has 87 points. (Points reflect the required event point caps required by the UIL.) Speech will compete in district on March 29.

The calculator applications  team took first overall to advance to regionals. The team included senior Melody Martinez, who took first place individually, junior Lizbeth Lorenzo, sophomore Chloe Garrison and freshman Caimbrien Jones.

In current issues and events, senior Cason Johnson took sixth.

The mathematics team took first overall to advance to regionals. The team included sophomore Omar Gameros who took first, sophomore David Guenther in second, along with Garrison and sophomore Madison Feiler.

The number sense team took first overall to advance to regionals. The team included sophomore Eduardo Rodarte in second, Gameros in third, along with sophomore Daniel Lapusan and junior Austin Lacy.

In ready writing,  sophomore Susana Friessen took fifth place.

The science team took second overall. sophomore Gavin Dickson was second, Lapusan was fourth, along with Garrison, Guenther, sophomore Nathan Friessen and Dickson.

The journalism team took second overall.

In news writing, freshman Lisbeth Corral took second, while freshman Myka Hernandez was sixth.

In feature writing, senior Tamara Hernandez was first, junior Heidi Giesbrecht was third, and senior Aganetha Wall was fourth.

In editorial writing, Giesbrecht was third, and Corral took fifth.

In headline writing, Wall was third, and Giesbrecht was fifth.

Regional competition will be April 22-23 at Texas Tech University.
