Jenkins advances with talent, Winfrey take state championship
Senior FFA member Sawyer Jenkins won first in the talent show at the Mesa District Fall Banquet on Dec. 8. Jenkins, who sang and played guitar, advanced to the area competition in April.
“It was a great opportunity to be able to sing in front of the district,” Jenkins said. “I get to advance to area, and if I win there, I will move on to the Texas State FFA Convention. If I win a state, I will get to attend the national FFA Convention for talent.”
Jenkins is not the only FFA member who recently advanced in competition. After the FFA area leadership competition in November, the first two places in each event advanced to state. This included senior Alec Winfrey who got first place in Job Interview. He felt good about qualifying for state again.
“I went to state last year,” Winfrey said. “I’m feeling really confident about going to state again this year.”
The state competition was a success for Winfrey. He placed first, competing against 20 other high school students who had advanced to state from their area competition for job interview. Because of this win, he was invited to go to the National FFA Convention. The convention will be held in Louisville, Kentucky, in October 2015.
