Art Club meets on Thursdays
The Art Club is in its second year of existence. The club meets on Thursdays during tutorials.
The Art Club started when art teacher Brice Autry surveyed his classes two years ago. One of the questions was how many people would participate in an art club. Several students were interested.
Co-sponsor art teacher Julee Reese said the main focus of the club this year is to involve the school and community in the arts.
“The goal is to raise awareness to students about art in the school and city,” Autry said. “We want to bring more culture into the city to show others how important it is.”
Both agreed that sponsoring the Art Club was worthwhile since it meant raising the future skills of their students.
“I love being an officer in the art club,” senior President Erynn James said. “I get to handle a lot of stuff for the group and plan what we do.”
The club is currently raising money for paint supplies to do a mural at the elementary. The club gives members more time to do the type of projects they enjoy.
“I love the fact that we all have a common interest in life,” James said. “It is fun to see the kids working on their art, seeing what they can do on their own.”
The club makes art more than just a class to the members.
“I like that the kids are so passionate about art,” Reese said. “I also like that they have goals and the means to achieve them.”
The extra time gives members more access to materials and equipment as well as extra time with instructors for projects and competition pieces.
“It means that I have students who want to spend extra time for art,” Autry said. “It makes me proud to be more than just an art teacher.”
