New procedures and rules greeted 606 students at the beginning of the semester including the discontinuation of Wednesday makeups. Instead, the district is complying with laws which changed the automatic 50 to a zero on school work last year. Students now only have three days to turn in missing work, take retests, etc. The days of handing in all missing work the last week of the six weeks are over.
Unexcused absence hours may only be made up at the end of the semester on the last three Saturdays.
Original requirements over frayed clothing has changed from its original announcement in the spring (no frays of any kind) to a more lenient code which does not allow ripped, torn, cut or frayed clothing if the openings allowed skin or any type of garment (tights, shorts, undergarments) underneath to show.
“We know how hard it is to find jeans without frays,” Principal Robert Chappell said. “We’re generally kid-friendly. We just want our students to look professional and not have anything revealing.”
The “socks” rule is gone, so male students are not required to wear socks with shoes or sandals.
“I’m glad about the sock change,” junior Jack Cagle said. “I think it was a good choice on the school board’s part.”
Another rule which is now more lenient is the camouflage rule. Students may now wear camouflage patterned clothing, although actual military combat fatigues are not allowed.
