I enjoy listening to older music rather than modern-day music. This is not to say I don’t like any new music, but the large majority of the music being produced now has no comparison to older music because it lacks key things that older music has.
I got into listening to older music when my mom would play classic rock songs while we were in the car. I really liked how they sounded, so I started listening to more classic rock music then expanded into other genres of older music.
What drew me to liking older singers is the passion they had for singing. When you listen to singers such as Freddie Mercury or Janis Joplin, the talent and love they had for singing is undeniable.
A lot of modern musical artists seem to view making music as making a product rather than making something they’re truly passionate about. They focus too much on making something people will like and t make them money rather than something they connect with.
I also like the lyrics better in older songs. A large majority of the songs that are popular now took whole teams of writers while a lot of older music was written by fewer people. I particularly like listening to older folk artists like Joan Baez because they focused primarily on writing good lyrics.
Old songs also tend to be longer than modern day songs. A lot of people now don’t like listening to long songs or will skip them halfway through if they think they’re too long, but I rather enjoy listening to longer songs because they allow for more lyrics which help the storytelling aspect of songwriting.
I’m not a fan of how commonly used autotune is in songs today. This is why singers were better back then because they had to rely on pure talent to make it in the music industry.
I’d argue that there is nothing modern music has to offer that is better than older music. With the wide variety of artists and tons of different genres, there is something everybody can enjoy, so I’d urge you to give older music a listen.
