GAME ON: Game that once fizzled now sizzles
Among Us was not the biggest hit back when it first released in 2018. Now, in 2020, after gameplays surfaced on Twitch and TikTok, Among Us was downloaded nearly 42 million times on Steam in the first half of September, and it was downloaded 84 million times on iOS and Android that month.
Among Us is a game revolving around 10 players. Matches can be altered to how you like to play, but I like to play with one imposter. With one imposter, there are nine crewmates. As a crewmate, you’re assigned tasks to do. Finish those tasks, and you win the game, but you also have a chance to be killed by the imposter. As the imposter, your goal is to sabotage and kill everyone–and get away with it.
If a body is discovered, the crewmate (or imposter) can report it. This leads to a discussion among everyone as they try to deduce who the impostor(s) is.
There are some people who take it seriously, using facts and evidence along with alibis to prove their cases. But there are also people who say, “Red is sus (suspicious),” with no evidence. Eventually, it comes down to a crewmate victory or an imposter victory.
Among Us has its pros and cons. On the upside, the gameplay in itself is very simplistic and easy to understand. It’s a blast to play with friends and family. It doesn’t take much skill to play it, plus, it’s free on iOS and Android devices, which is able to be played cross-platform. As a result, players from all walks of life can play together.
On the downside, teamers are always going to be a thing in gaming. Teamers in Among Us are one of the most annoying things you will ever come across because they’re worse than hackers to me. Being a teamer means that if you find out who the imposter is, via dying, your teammate will ruin the game for everybody else by telling them it is you. If one of the teamers is an imposter, you will easily get outvoted and it will result in a victory for the imposter.
The second downside is the hackers. It’s very difficult to hack on mobile, but it is still possible. Most hackers come from the cross-platform PC players who can kill everyone with a very short kill duration, make themselves imposter, or you name it, they can probably do it.
In the end, Among Us, is a hit for a reason. It’s brought people together and formed friendships, especially for me. I’d rate the game a solid 4.5-5 stars, but I’m sure future updates and everything will make it a perfect 5/5. Innersloth, the developers, decided to stop production on Among Us 2 to focus on making the current Among Us even better. So, I’d keep an eye on the future for updates and what’s to come.
