As the stands filled with alumni for the homecoming pep rally on Sept. 2, one of the alumni who made his way back to SHS was 1951-52 War Whoop Editor Charlie McReynolds. McReynolds who is a real estate and insurance agent in Garland, Texas, visited the journalism classroom and met his predecessors fifty years later.
McReynold, who once wrote a column called “As I See It…” on page two of the War Whoop, still writes. Here are two of his poems…
Two Old Cowboys
Wootsie Houston was an old Cowboy.
John Ancell was one too.
They fenced and wind milled
And did what cowboys do.
They could ride a bornc.
They could rope a calf.
If you were around either very long
They would surely make you laugh.
Wootsie came off of a big cattle ranch.
John, he came off of a dry land farm.
Both were not city boys.
They were more happy down at the barn.
Both were from Seminole, Texas.
They played football on the Indian team.
Don’t make either one mad
You just might have to scream!
They don’t have many like them
Left on the old green earth,
But while Wootsie and John were here
They proved what men are worth.
You’ll Come Back, You Hear?
I want to tell you about some Indians.
The Seminole, Texas kind.
I may do a little bragging
If you do not mind.
You see we are surrounded
By all kinds of foes,
Tornados and Panthers
And even mean Lobos.
Yellow Jackets
Are subject to swarm,
But we are Indians.
They can do us no harm.
Eagles never live
In the chicken coop,
But they wish they did
When they hear that War Whoop!
Some Mustangs are
Really hard to tame.
We just rope them and brand them
And give them a name.
So we have Panther skins
And Mustangs that are tame.
We have Eagle feathers
And even Lobo fangs.
They may beat us in footbal,
But the have to come back.
We’ll beat them in volleyball
Or basketball or track.
It’s even fun
When an Indian gets old
Cause there are still lots of tales
That need to be told.
So the great Indian Come Back
Is when we all get together.
Show me your scars,
And I’ll show you my feather.
