SkillsUSA takes 6 state awards, advances two teams to nationals

We won!– Sophomores Rachel Rempel, Isabella Rudder and freshman Yarely Avila rush off the stage to adviser Thomas Spence after qualifying for nationals at the state SkillUSA competition this weekend. The trio took first place with their community service project “Give a Child a Smile.”

The SkillsUSA chapters had 10 students take state awards with two teams advancing to nationals after competition in Corpus Christi on March 31 and April 1.

The SkillsUSA Auto Tech team of sophomore Isabella Rudder, sophomore Rachel Rempel and freshman Yarely Avila took first at state and advanced to nationals.

Also advancing to nationals in Atlanta in June  was the SkillsUSA Health Sciences health knowledge bowl team of  junior Adam Garcia, senior Jason Lawrence, senior Kaegan Lovelady and junior Felicity Peters also took gold and advanced to nationals.

SkillsUSA Auto Tech took a silver for chapter of excellence, while Thomas Spence was named adviser of the year.

Senior Kaegan Lovelady took the bronze medal for nurse assisting, while senior Christian Torres took bronze for basic healthcare skills.
