Maidens take on San Elizario in bi-district

Strong side Senior outside hitter Robin Franklin goes up for a kill against Greenwood during district play on Oct. 24. The Maidens won the first two sets, but eventually fell to Greenwood, taking their district record to 3-7 and setting up a seeding play off with Pecos on Oct. 26.

The Maiden volleyball team will take on San Elizario in bi-district play at 6 p.m. in Fort Stockton on Oct. 29.

The Maidens defeated San Elizario in bi-district last year in five sets.

The Maidens defeated Pecos in a district seeding game on Oct. 26 in straight sets to take fourth place. Later in the week, Greenwood was stripped of its third place spot due to COVID-19 procedural violations, so the Maidens could have elected to move into third place, but chose to let Pecos take third since a play-off game was already set with San Elizario.

“Staying in fourth place was the easier route for the play offs,” senior outside hitter Robin Franklin said. “If we make it to the area round, we would play Canyon rather than Hereford who has beaten Canyon twice. Both are tough teams.”

The Maidens recently switched to a five-one offense which works with only one setter in senior Kamryn Cottrell.

“Running a five-one helps our team come back from a point deficit,” Cottrell said. “We also are better able to utilize our hitters.”
