Indians take on San Angelo Central on road

Starting the offense– Sophomore guard Parker Freeman brings the ball down court during non conference play with Levelland on Dec. 11.

The Indians will travel to San Angelo Central tonight in preseason action.

The Indians defeated Levelland, 61-52, taking their record to 10-4.

The Indians lost a whole generation of its state-qualifying team to graduation, so the season has been trial and error building around the handful of remaining lettermen.

“We have three seniors and two juniors,” senior forward Anthony Moncayo said. “We have only three returns, so we are trying to do our best to lead our very young team. They are following pretty well. They are young, but when they are out on the court they don’t act like it at all.”

The team will play in the new southern district with familiar opponents in Fort Stockton, Pecos, Andrews and Monahans.

“[The district is] not as tough as last year,” senior guard Jesus Perez Dominguez said. “It’ll be much easier because we don’t have to play Estacado, Levelland and Brownfield. Andrews will be pretty tough. They have really good players, and they will be better than the rest of the teams we will play in district.”

Despite the lack of experience, of the team junior post Jalen Brattain said the Indians will be tough.

“We’re hard to defeat when everyone is playing together and not being selfish,” Brattain said. “It’s hard for anyone to beat us.”

The Indians will take the climb one step at a time.

“The goal is to win district, get back to the regional tournament and have a chance at state, too,” Coach David Williams said. “We plan to just take it one game at a time, focus on the game in front of us and try to get better every day.”
