The tennis team out played Brownfield on Oct. 26, 14-6.
Wins went to senior Ky Morris and junior Noah Maxwell in men’s singles and senior Christian Mendoza and Maxwell in men’s doubles. In women’s singles, wins went to senior Cynthia Martinez, senior Barbara Segovia, sophomore Aracely Avila, freshman Graciela Segovia, freshman Cheyanne Millican and freshman Alicia Villarreal. In women’s doubles, wins went to teams of seniors Aidee Avila and Alma Pinon and the team of Millican and Villarreal.
In mixed doubles, Mendoza and B. Segovia won.
With total match wins over teams from Permian and Frenship in the last two weeks, the tennis team has stepped up its game since its new complex has opened.
“The kids played well,” Coach Rhonda Burns said. “To me that proves the kids are coming along. The older kids have more experience and are doing well, while the freshmen are coming along.”
According to Burns, the size of the school in an opponent isn’t really a factor.
“The team is improving, and they do step up when they need to,” Burns said. “They aren’t intimidated by big-name schools.”
The new complex is what Burns terms “fan-friendly” because unlike the old courts, the new ones have the option for any person to view up to about four matches from just one spot.
Another plus is the lack of cracks which were a hindrance to play.
“All the coaches are looking forward to playing on these courts,” Burns said. “All their kids are tired of old, cracked ones. An ex-Texas Tech tennis coach said that these were nicer than theirs.”
All the fall play leads up to district play and beyond in the spring.
“I think the team’s been doing okay,” senior Ky Morris said. “We’ll probably be doing better at district.”
Last year’s lone regional qualifier, senior Jenna Johnson, injured her elbow warming up on Tuesday, but it doesn’t appear to be hyper-extended, so she will only be out for a week or so.
“I want to be district champ,” Johnson said. “I’m going to give all my effort in practice and keep my mental game strong.”
Johnson said its liberating to win against big schools because all of the hard work is paying off.
