Surrounded by construction and noise, the tennis team still practices and plays matches. Their next action will be tomorrow in Levelland.
The team took the road to San Angelo on Sept. 11 to play a dual with Lake View and Central.
The team dropped 14 matches to Central with the doubles team of seniors Barbara Segovia and Cynthia Martinez taking the lone win, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Against Lake View, the SHS squad took four matches and lost 10. Wins went to senior Jenna Johnson (8-5) and freshman Aracely Avila (1-6, 6-0, 10-3) in women’s singles.
In mixed doubles Johnson and senior Ky Morris won, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Noah Maxwell took a win (7-5, 1-1) in men’s singles when his opponent vomited.
“It was 100 degrees and I was sweating like a quart every two minutes,” Maxwell said. “My competitor and I were equal, but he threw up, so the match was called.”
The team has been working on skill levels as their new facility almost reaches completion.
“I did really well because I changed my serves,” Maxwell said. “They weren’t flat like they usually are, and I put more spin on them.”
