Random acts of kindness are dying occurrences. Few people do good for others out of the kindness of their hearts anymore.
We take for granted all of the stuff we have just because we have it, and it was easy to come by for us. Other people don’t have the same opportunities as we do. They could really use our help. Don’t think “Well, everyone has enough, so I won’t bother donating anything.” There is need everywhere. Just because we can’t see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Random acts of kindness can save lives. That sounds a bit out there, but if you understand what seems small to us like a few canned goods or a new coat make a gigantic difference to those in need. Some people don’t have the money they need to buy enough food for their families. There are plenty of groups and organizations that can take food donations for those people in need.
Join one of those groups or just volunteer to help them deliver food. It can help change a person’s outlook on life. If they see and experience us randomly helping them, it can make them want to help others in their lives. This is the “pay it forward” scenario. That in turn will make other people want to help, and sooner or later, everyone is helping each other.
Bringing cans of food is not very hard. They’re cheap, and if you can’t buy any, sneak out some asparagus or brussel sprouts or any other nasty vegetable that nobody eats at your house. Your family will never miss them, while a needy family will be happy to have them.
Random acts of kindness could be a leading cause of joy in our hearts. It sounds dumb, we know, but it honestly gives us a lift to feel the satisfaction of helping without any reward. We don’t always have to get some material reward for ourselves.
So while shopping for gifts for your own family, take a few dollars and add something for other families who will appreciate it. Both the National Honor Society and student council have worthy drives going on right now.
Next time you see that person trying to decide what he or she needs to put back in order to pay for their groceries, help them out and don’t expect anything in return. That good feeling will be a random act of kindness to yourself.
