Five individuals and one-act play qualify for state

Five members of the academic team and the one-act play qualified for state competition as the academic team tied for fourth overall with 132 points at the Region 1 academic meet at Texas Tech on April 12-14.

The speech team took second place with four state qualifiers.

In persuasive speaking, senior Carter Laramore was first and junior Carlye Winfrey was second, both qualifying for state.

In poetry interpretation, junior Phiona Hiebert took third, qualifying for state, while senior Isabel Acosta was fourth.

In prose interpretation, senior Alex Gonzalez was second, qualifying for state, while junior Dillon Gutierrez took fifth.

In informative speaking, freshman Caleb Alexander was sixth.

In news writing, senior Anna Teichroeb took third, qualifying for state.

In feature writing, Teichroeb took fourth.

The one-act play, A Street Car Named Desire, advanced to state. Hiebert and senior Cade Barnard were named to the all-star cast. Acosta was honorable mention. Junior Zach Fear was chosen as all-star sound technician.

One-act play will compete in the state meet on April 23 at Round Rock High School.

The state news writing competition is May 3 at noon at the University of Texas in Austin.

The state speech competition is May 21-22 at UT.
