One-act play joins 21 other qualifications to region meet

Last minute details–Math coach Gracie Sosa works with senior Hector Marquez as UIL competitors prepare for competition as Seminole hosts the district meet on March 22.

The one-act play advanced to the region level on April 1 along with Andrews and Greenwood.

Senior Nikki Loewen took best actress honors, while junior Alex Gonzalez was all-star cast and senior Faith Klassen was honorable mention.

Sophomore Kambree Ellison received the backstage award while senior Clayton Froese was chosen as best lighting technician.

The play will compete in regionals on April 6 in Lubbock.

The UIL academic team took second place in the district meet which finished on March 24.

Denver City took first with 620 points, Seminole had 509 points, Levelland earned 210 points, Brownfield took 136 points, Estacado had 56 points, and Lamesa had 49 points.

The overall district championship includes all academic events with one-act play and cross-examination debate from earlier in the semester. Individual events require a first, second or third finish to advance to regionals. In individual events, a team with the highest score can advance all four team members to regionals. Seminole had 21 region qualifications in 13 events.

The speech team took the team championship .

In informative speaking sophomore Nat Little took first, and junior Lori Wilson was second.

In persuasive speaking,junior Carter Laramore was first, and sophomore Carlye Winfrey took second.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Little took first, Wilson took second and freshman Lisa Loewen took third.

In poetry interpretation, senior Grace Hatley took first, senior Ashley Harder was second, and sophomore Phiona Hiebert took third.

In prose interpretation, senior Nikki Loewen took first, senior Madeline Hiebert was second, and senior Faith Klassen took third.

In accounting, sophomore Landry Ritchey took third, and junior Alyssa Garcia took fourth, while the team which included sophomore Melissa Moore took second overall.

In current issues and events, junior Katie Spradlin took sixth.

In computer applications, senior Nick Acosta took third, junior Triniti Mojica took fourth, and senior Eva Fehr was fifth.

In literary criticism, Klassen took fifth, while the team which included senior Kree Ellison and junior Kami Luettgen took second overall.

In mathematics, senior Hector Marquez took sixth, while the team which included senior Isaiah Marquez, senior Sarah Smith and senior Alyssa Carnes took second overall.

In number sense, Carnes took sixth. In ready writing, senior Yesenia Olivas was first, while junior Celestia Wilkey took second.

In science, junior J.J. Ayala took third. In social studies, Acosta took first, while the team took the overall championship, including sophomore Austin Shortes, junior Katie Spradlin and senior Aaron Espinoza whose score broke a team tie with Denver City.

In spelling, freshman Jeremy Lawrence took fourth, while the team which included Wilkey and sophomore Brittney Weeks took second overall.

The journalism team took first overall in a combined four events.

In news writing, sophomore Dusty Barron took second, and junior Anna Teichroeb was sixth. In feature writing, senior Eva Neufeld took first, Teichroeb was second, and Spradlin was fifth.

In editorial writing, Neufeld was fourth and Teichroeb was fifth.

In headline writing, Teichroeb was first, Barron was third, and Neufeld was fourth.

UIL journalism piloted the copyediting event for a second year. It was not a scored event and could not advance this year. Freshman Dustie Beaubien took first, sophomore Jessenia Balderas took second and freshman Annie Wieler was fourth.

The one-act play, By the Bog of Cats, advanced as one of the three plays including Denver City and Levelland which advanced to area level and will compete in Midland on April 1. All star cast included junior Cade Barnard as best actor, N. Loewen as best actress, P. Hiebert and Klassen as all star cast, and senior Lauren Franco was honorable mention all star cast.

The cross-examination debate team of Klassen and Harder took second earlier in the semester.
