Academics qualifies 35 individuals in 18 events for regionals

Cramming for exam– Spelling team members sophomore Lacy Jackson, senior Tori Acosta, junior Nick Acosta and sophomore Celestia Wilkey study in the Monahans High cafeteria prior to their contest on April 6. The team took first place overall, qualifying all of its members for regionals.

The UIL academic teams which include one-act play and speech took second place overall in the district meet which spanned two weeks, ending on April 7. Final results of the meet included Andrews with 554 points, Seminole with 549 points, Greenwood with 143 points, Monahans with 88 points, Fort Stockton with 56 points and Pecos with 44 points.

The six speech events for Seminole took the overall speech team championship which included cross-examination debate from earlier in the semester.

In informative speaking senior Antonio Porras took second and senior Cassandra Schultz took third both qualifying for regionals. Sophomore Lori Wilson was sixth.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, senior Ethan Ruiz was first and Schultz was third, both qualifying for regionals.

In persuasive speaking, Ruiz was third, qualifying for regionals. Freshman Nathaniel Little was sixth.

In poetry interpretation, all three speakers qualified for regionals: junior Ashley Harder was first, senior Kelby Miller was second and freshman Phiona Hiebert was third. In prose interpretation, all three speakers qualified for regionals: senior Blayne Childers in first, junior Madeline Hiebert in second and senior Ivan Froese in third.

The four journalism events for Seminole took the overall journalism team championship.

In news writing junior Eva Fehr was second and senior Sara Fehr was third, both qualifying for regionals. Sophomore Anna Teichroeb was sixth.

In feature writing, Neufeld took first qualifying for regionals. Sophomore Katie Spradlin was fourth and Fehr was sixth.

In editorial writing, Neufeld was fourth and Spradlin was sixth.

In headline writing, Fehr was first and Neufeld was second both qualifying for regionals. Teichroeb was sixth.

In ready writing, all three writers qualified for regionals: junior Yesenia Olivas was first, junior Nick Acosta was second and senior Tori Acosta was third.

The calculator team took second overall with senior Jordan Lashaway tied for third, qualifying for regionals. Senior Jocelin Loewen in fifth and junior Bethany Jones in sixth.

In current issues and events, senior Destiny Winn took second, qualifying for regionals.

The literary criticism team took second overall with senior Michelle Guevara Gonzalez in second, senior J.D. Martin in third, both qualifiying for regionals. Senior Kaitlyn Daniels was sixth.

The mathematics team took first overall, qualfying for regionals with senior Neil Thiessen in first, Loewen in second and Lashaway in fourth. Senior Neil Froese also qualified with the team.

In number sense, Lashaway took second, qualifying for regionals.

In science, the team took first overall, qualifying for regionals with senior Abby Navarro in first with the top physics and top biology scores. Loewen tied for third with junior Alyssa Carnes. Other advancing teammates include sophomore Sam Medrano, sophomore J.J. Ayala and Jones.

In spelling and vocabulary, the team took first overall with sophomore Lacy Jackson in first, sophomore Celestia Wilkey in third, Tori Acosta in fourth and Nick Acosta in fifth. All three qualified for regionals with the team.

The social studies team took second overall with Lashaway in first, qualifying for regionals. Senior Royce Snethen was fourth.

One-act play scored 33 points in district competition two weeks ago.

Regional competition will be at Texas Tech on April 23-24.
